Oh, I LOVE pears!! I almost bought some in the grocery the other day, but we opted for peaches instead.
Oh, and you had mentioned that you had an abundance of basil this year. I came across this tutorial on how to freeze it. We didn't do herbs this year, so I haven't tried it but it looks easy enough.
If you want pears, just go pick them......do you know where our trees are? Chris probably does. They are right across the road from the house nearest our hog barns. The pears look nasty because the skin is funky looking but the insides are beautiful. I'm not sure what kind of pears they are but they work the best for canning. They are a bit tough to eat raw. If you want to make applesauce, take some apples from the two trees closest to the highway (farthest east) and peel/core them and boil them down and they turn to mush. Add desired amount of sugar/honey/cinnamon and WHAM you've got yourself yummy applesauce.
I can't access that link for whatever reason......I can't even see the whole link so I can't copy and paste. I'm sure it's just my settings but I'm too lazy to figure it out. I plan on chopping the basil and freezing it in ice cube trays with a bit of water (once they are frozen I'll put all the ice cubes in a ziploc). Then when I need some basil I just throw an ice cube into the food as I'm cooking it. I usually only use basil in sauces and soups so this method works well for me. What's the basic method of the link?
Oh, thank you!! We will go get some fruit. Mmmmm...mmmm!! Mom and I are having a canning and freezing marathon tomorrow so perfect timing! If you want any green peppers, just let me know. We have SOOOOO many and I really don't know what to do with them all. We can drop some off on Sunday if you'd like. The basil thing is basically chop it up and drizzle it with olive oil. That keeps it from getting dark and nasty in the freezer. Then freeze it in little containers. Ice cube trays are perfect. This link should work: http://tiny.cc/WuBgT
Great looking pears! We found a source of apples this year, so we went with some neighbors and brought home tons. We made applesauce, pie filling and apple juice too :) I wish we had pears...:( Oh well...next spring we plan on planting our own fruit trees!! Melissa
